Ilgak, the Freak Monk (일각, Ilgak) is a monk of the Shaolin Temple and a senior member of the old Murim being a part of the Sage Forest. In the past, he was once a highly-ranked agent of the Old Murim Alliance, bearing authority equal to the Murim High Lord himself.

Appearance & Personality[]

Ilgak is a young monk with lustrous skin and a plump physique.[1] He has a typical Shaolin monk appearance with elongated earlobes, bald head, and six dots on his forehead. He wore a mala and traditional monk garments.
Several decades after the war against the Asura Blood Sect, Ilgak has aged noticeably sporting wrinkles and white facial hair. He also grew out a long sharp beard and fu manchu moustache.

Ilgak is a frivolous man who loves to joke around. He can be serious at times but those moments are often undermined by his antics, annoying those around him. Despite being a monk, Ilgak frequents the red-light districts and loves drinking. He can easily consume several barrels of wine in a short period and often offered favors in return for alcohol.

History[]

Ilgak was taken in as a disciple by Grand Monk Baegun, the most revered monk since Dharma, Huike, and Huineng. Eventually, he was appointed as the Murim High Lord's proxy on behalf of the Shaolin Temple.[2]

Following Grand Monk Baegun's death, Ilgak left the Shaolin since there were signs of young martial monks trying to back him for the vacant seat of the Shaolin's head monk position. He wanted to avoid needless factional infighting against his sasuk Great Monk Haewoon.[2]

After the massacre at Geumcheonbo headquarters, Ilgak was appointed as the Murim Alliance's chief inspector by the Murim High Lord to investigate the incident.[3]

Plot[]

Yongbi the Invincible[]

Volume 3[]

At a Murim Inn, groups of martial artists discussed the massacre at Geumcheonbo, the deaths of the Shadowless Ghost Trio, and the Golden Medallion. As two men were about to get into a fight, Yongbi entered the inn and the blood red glow of the Golden Medallion tied to his staff attracted the attention of everyone in the room including Ilgak. Yongbi then effortlessly fended off the hordes of martial artists attacking him while Ilgak watched, praising his prowess with the staff. After taking care of his assailants, Yongbi rode off and Ilgak noted that a bloodbath would come to the Murim.

Later, as Yongbi continued his journey, he went to take a drink from his barrel of wine but found out there wasn't any wine left in it. Smashing the barrel, he discovered Ilgak sleeping inside, having snuck in there somehow. Suddenly, Sanggwan Chaek arrived and attacked Yongbi. As they clash, Yongbi used Goo Hwi's body to bait out one of Sanggwan Chaek's attacks and as Yongbi was about to strike Sanggwan Chaek with a surprise attack, the latter surrendered. Sanggwan Chaek then properly introduced himself as the second disciple of the Cheonwoong Faction. Adding that he was only testing Yongbi's skills. Sanggwan Chaek explained to Yongbi that he sought him out because his master liked to befriend heroes from all over the world. While Yongbi gathered his belongings, he scolded Sanggwan Chaek for attacking him. After finding out that Biryong had gotten drunk by licking the wine off the Ilgak's body, Yongbi had to rely on Sanggwan Chaek's horse to pull his cart. Yongbi also flung Ilgak into a nearby well as punishment for stealing his wine.

Volume 4[]

At the Cheonwoong Faction's Hweyang Villa, Yongbi told an incredibly embellished story of how he captured Goo Hwi to Sanggwan Chaek, as they drank wine. After running out of wine, Yongbi left to retrieve his cask of wine. Then bringing back the cask to the patio, Sanggwan Chaek held Yongbi back from killing Ilgak, who had somehow slipped into Yongbi's cask and consumed all the wine.

After Gwan was severely injured by Cruel Moon Archdemon, Ilgak brought Gwan to safety at the Cheonwoong Faction headquarters and treated his injuries.

Volume 5[]

After treating Gwan, Ilgak secretly slipped out of the Cheonwoong Faction's headquarters, leaving them in chaos as they tried to find him.

Volume 6[]

Sanggwan Chaek and the demonists arrived at the edge of the Muhae Valley and the former confirmed that it was indeed where the Golden Castle lied. Unbeknownst to them, Ilgak was secretly trailing them.

Volume 7[]

Later in the Valley, Sanggwan Chaek and the demonists realised that they had stumbled into a protective ward. Cruel Moon Archdemon noted that the presence of a protective ward could only mean that the Golden Castle must be nearby and then unleashed a devastating technique, completely destroying the protective ward and their group quickly continued onward before the thick fog regathers. Ilgak also continued following them.

Ilgak then secretly joined up with Yongbi's group, slipping into his barrel of wine and consuming all of it. At some point, Yongbi realized he was in there and broke open the barrel, finding a sleeping Ilgak inside. Yongbi goes beserk and attempted to kill Ilgak but Biryong shielded the sleeping monk from harming, intending to lick the wine off him. Eventually, Ilgak woke up and revealed that the Golden Medallion Yongbi had in possession was the fake one. Yongbi desperately tried to recall how he ended up with the fake Golden Medallion forged by the Gold Bug while Sohsoh pondered what to do next. As they were about to get into a fight, Ilgak interrupted them, saying that he would disclose Sanggwan Chaek's location in exchange for wine.

Ilgak then led Yongbi's group to the area where Cruel Moon Archdemon destroyed the protective ward. However, Yongbi attacked Ilgak for consuming two barrels of his wine despite the promise.

Volume 8[]

Yongbi's group continued their travels and Yul Mugi fell ill. Hyeon Jae-Yang decided to infuse Yul Mugi with some of his ki at Ilgak's suggestion. Later, an earthquake rang out across the Valley, and they abandoned the cart to seek refuge among the trees.

As they waited out the earthquake, Sohsoh noticed a signal from the Red Bloods and wandered off. Hyeon Jae-Yang wandered off as well, using exhaustion as an excuse. Ilgak removed his pants to go to the bathroom and unwittingly exposed his buttocks to the Young Lady accompanying Hyeon Jae-Yang. She angrily smashed her jar of wine over his head, stomped him in the buttocks, and prepared to bury him.

Volume 9[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang eventually returned and met up with the young lady that accompanied him to the Muhae Valley and informed her that they need to go find Sanggwan Chaek. As the young lady left, she discovers that Ilgak was still alive despite having been buried and ran off thinking he was a ghost.

Volume 10[]

As Yul Mugi traveled aimlessly and alone through the valley, he was beset by a madman however, Arong saved him in time. Nearby, Ilgak sat on a pile of bodies, revealing that he had been protecting him in the shadows. However, now that the Red Bloods' intelligent "Dragon Horse" was protecting the boy, Ilgak decided to go complete his mission.

Volume 11[]

A group of martial artists traversed the underground passages. One of them noticed something and threw his spear but with it seemingly hitting nothing, he came to the conclusion that he was imagining things. When the group of martial artists left, Biryong emerged from the shadows revealing that the spear had struck his buttocks. As Biryong squirmed in pain, Ilgak showed up and praised Biryong for holding off his screaming in order to protect his master. Then Ilgak removed the spear from Biryong and proceeded to correct Yongbi's distorted ki flow.

As Yongbi circulated his ki, Ilgak sat around drinking and claimed that he would have let Yongbi die if it wasn't for the barrels of wine he was given. Visibly annoyed, Yongbi questioned Ilgak on the latter's identity and what he was plotting. Ilgak joked around and answered that he was Buddha Maitreya. In response, Yongbi repeatedly headbutted Ilgak but ultimately informed Ilgak that he doesn't care about the monk's true identity as long as he does not interfere. As Yongbi and Ilgak fought over the latter's bundle of clothes, Biryong sensed that Arong was in trouble and urged Yongbi to hurry to her location. Before vanishing, Ilgak warned Yongbi of strange signs manifesting around the place they are in (the impending eruption of the volcanoes), and that he should hurry up and find the Golden Castle.

Later, emerging from a tunnel, Ilgak found himself in vicinity of the Golden Castle and after seeing a large amount of corpses nearby, he became worried that someone may have acquired the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword already.

Volume 12[]

Sanggwan Chaek was on a killing spree with the godly sword when Ilgak encountered and happily greeted the young man. In their ensuing clash, Ilgak evaded every attack from Sanggwan Chaek and the monk expressed his disappointment in the latter's level of swordsmanship when wielding such a godly sword. Catching the blade in his hands, Ilgak attempted to disarm Sanggwan Chaek of the sword but the power of the sword tore away at Ilgak's palm, causing the monk to fall back.

Sanggwan Chaek relentlessly slashed at Ilgak but the monk evaded every single one thanks to his amazing agility and reflexes. Knowing that he could not retrieve the sword just by dodging, Ilgak took off his Mala to use as a weapon and prepared to fight. lgak attempted to block a slash with his mala but the sword cut straight through it. Ilgak dodgesd the slash and sent Sanggwan Chaek flying with two kicks to the head and then in one swift move, launched the beads from his severed mala, riddling Sanggwan Chaek with holes. With Sanggwan Chaek seemingly dead, Ilgak goes over to retrieve the sword but found it fused to the former's hand. Sanggwan Chaek (possessed) got up and his body pushed the mala beads out of his flesh. Ilgak managed to evade the ensuing slashes, noting that the power behind them had increased. After mentioning that Sanggwan Chaek looked no longer human, Ilgak exuded an immense amount of ki and countered with a secret technique, releasing a massive explosion.

Volume 13[]

Hyeon Jae-Yang and his companion stumbled upon Ilgak's body among a pile of corpses. In return for saving Gwan's life, they decided to give the monk a proper funeral. As they cremate the body, Ilgak suddenly came back to life and he later revealed that he faked his death using a secret technique he invented. In a conversation, Ilgak further revealed that he fought against the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, and alluded that the person wielding it might be someone Hyeon Jae-Yang knew.

Volume 14[]

In Hyeon Jae-Yang's battle with Sanggwan Chaek and the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, he used the Grand Divine Celestial Destruction Technique which dealt fatal blows to Sanggwan Chaek and nearly destroyed the Golden Castle. Outside, Ilgak noted that the Golden Castle would have been smashed to smithereens if Hyeon Jae-Yang used his ultimate technique at full power and wondered if he held back out of consideration for his favorite disciple. Ilgak found Hyeon Jae-Yang among the rubble and corrected his distorted ki flow but was unable to do more for his severe internal injuries. Then they shockingly watched Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body rise up from the rubble nearby with his grievous wounds healing.

Ilgak then received significant damage in an attempt to the deflect the blows from the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword. With no other options, Ilgak tried to feign death with his secret technique but the Young Lady stomped him multiple times in the face for trying to only save himself. As the Young Lady continued punishing Ilgak, Hyeon Jae-Yang expressed regret for withdrawing his ki halfway through his ultimate technique out of love for his disciple. As Sanggwan Chaek's possessed body approached the trio, Yongbi arrived.

Then, to the shock of everyone, Yongbi defeated Sanggwan Chaek and decided to spare the latter out of respect for Hyeon Jae-Yang (not knowing that Sanggwan Chaek was dead and his body was being controlled by the sword's spectre). Sanggwan Chaek unleashed a surprise attack but Yongbi narrowly dodged it and the latter wondered how Chaek recovered so quickly after taking so much damage. Ilgak desperately informed Yongbi that the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword made Chaek nearly immortal and commanded Yongbi to defeat the sword.

Eventually, Yongbi obliterated Sanggwan Chaek's body, and launching the godly sword into the depths below, triggering a volcanic eruption.

Volume 15[]

Ilgak, Hyeon Jae-Yang, and the Young Lady tried to evacuate the area by crossing the suspension bridge but tremors in the volcano make it difficult. Suddenly, Biryong galloped past them going in the opposite direction and then they encountered Goo Hwi who was about to pursue the horse. They had a short conversation and Ilgak eventually convinced Goo Hwi to carry Hyeon Jae-Yang out much to the latter's chagrin.

They found their way out of the volcano and rushed to get as far away as possible. As Ilgak made his escape, he coincidently interrupted some Black Snake assassins and Murim Alliance agents who were about to clash. Ilgak questioned the agents on why they were not staying concealed as per his orders and the leader of the agents replied that he initiated the second phase of their operation after receiving no word from the monk. The leader's reply revealed to Ilgak that the Murim High Lord gave the agents these secret instructions without his knowledge. Ilgak then told them to retreat and rushed off with the agents following close behind.

With the recent incident passing, at the Murim Alliance headquarters, Ilgak left after recovering from his injuries sustained in the Muhae Valley. However, on his way out, he encountered the Murim High Lord and they talked about the Geumcheonbo's late master and the events that happened in the Muhae Valley. The Murim High Lord then commanded Ilgak to divulge the details of his investigation before the monk resigns as chief inspector.

Later, Ilgak met up with Hyeon Jae-Yang and informed him that the Cheonwoong Faction was punished with three months probation for their involvement surrounding the Golden Medallion. Furthermore, it is revealed the Murim Alliance had been wary of the Asura Blood Sect all along and have been prepared for their eventual return. Their conversation continued outside and Ilgak mentioned that before he could return to the Shaolin, he must complete the task of finding and bringing Yongbi to the Murim Alliance. At that, Hyeon Jae-Yang mused about the powerful gosu in the murim and affirmed that truly, the "Murim is Vast"

At some point, Illgak visited Lee Serin for information on Yongbi since he had a run in with him.

Yongbi the Invincible - A Side Story[]

Volume 1[]

Ilgak remembersed his task to retrieve the Holy Sutras by going in disguise as Shadowless Swordsman Neungbo, who would guide the companions of the person who had stolen the sutras. Arriving into their base, they informed Neungbo of the leader of the expedition, "Myo Daehyub", someone he was apparently already acquainted with. Suddenly Myo Daehyub arrived and Ilgak wondered what to do. Coming outside, he realised that Myo Daehyub was none other than Yongbi in a paper-thin disguise. Myo Daehyub enthusiastically greeted Neungbo, much to the latter's chagrin.

Later, Ilgak and Yongbi humorously discussed the latter's plan to ransack the Bogwang Temple, a branch of the Shaolin, the following day. Returning back to their base, Yongbi informed the group of the change to attack immediately instead of the next day before exposing Ilgak as a spy from the Shaolin Temple. Setting fire to their base, with a tied up Ilgak still inside, Myo Daehyub and his group headed over to the Bogwang Temple.

As Yongbi and his team infiltrated the Bogwang Temple. Ilgak suddenly arrived, having escaped, and he and the other Shaolin monks suppressed the infiltrators. Meanwhile Yongbi goes to the prison cell holding Yook Socheon and retrieved him whilst also locking his two "allies" inside. Revealing his ruse to the two, Yongbi escaped with Yook Socheon on his back. Ilgak was seen watching everything unfold from a rooftop.

Some time later, Ilgak and Yongbi had drinks together while discussing the retrieved items, before Ilgak comically left Yongbi with the expensive bill.

Between the events of Yongbi the Invincible and Gosu (The Master)...

Ilgak participated in the Old Murim Alliance's war against the Asura Blood Sect.[4] The long and devastating war ended with a Pyrrhic Victory for the Murim Alliance and the monk settled down in the Sage Forest.

Gosu (The Master)[]

Revived Heavenly Destruction Sect[]

As Goo Hwi and Yongbi have a meeting with Hyeol Bi, Ilgak was tasked with infiltrating their enemies' base to look for any trace of the Demonic Cult. When they left, Ilgak came out from under the cart and revealed that after searching the Sky Gorge Mountain, he found nothing related to the Demonic Cult. Ilgak mused that Goo Hwi may have been wrong on his notion, but the latter replied that they may have just hid it very well. Yongbi then mused that they'd find out soon.

Returning to their base, Yongbi oversaw the test to see who would be the champions for their side in their upcoming battle. Ilgak came in to ask what would happen if none passed the test, but Hong Ye-Mong assured him that they had three champions already. Ilgak then complimented Ye-Mong's beauty and questioned why only she and Yongbi don't seem to age. However, she kept the method a secret, noting it wasn't something a celibate could do.

Later near the Sky Gorge Mountain, Gang Ryong killed Hyeol Bi but latter came back to life through the use of Demonic Resurrection. Nearby, sensing the unique energy that was produced whenever someone came back from the dead, Yongbi pondered if they should go back. However, Ilgak revealed his presence and interjected, stating that they have no time to lose. He also dismissed the presence of the unique energy as nothing to worry about as they encountered it many times when fighting against the Asura Blood Sect. Yongbi agreed but it didn't sit well with Goo Hwi. Ilgak then noted that breaking a barrier without getting caught wasn't easy, and that they could not delay any longer or their enemy would notice. As the trio travelled elsewhere, Goo Hwi stopped and suggested that they go back to Hyeol Bi since he was troubled by what they sensed earlier. Ilgak angrily disagreed, fearing that they'll be found out if they left through the barrier again. After discussing amongst themselves, they decided to continue on.

Yongbi then accidentally knocked over a barrier stone, alerting Hwan Sa to their presence and triggering a trap. Enormous rocks rain down on them and the elderly trio rushes to escape it. After clearing the trap, the trio was greeted by the Grand Prelate of the now defunct Asura Blood Sect, Okcheonbi, who was thought to be long dead (this later turned out to be just a clone). Okcheonbi confronted the three elders and Yongbi took the initiative, striking first with a powerful attack. However, the Grand Prelate deflected the attack, hitting Ilgak who managed to block it but got sent flying back. Yongbi goes to check up on the monk and they started arguing. As Okcheonbi spoke to the Heaven Ravager King, Yongbi got up to do battle but Ilgak stopped him, telling him to keep his promise of letting the monk leave safely but Yongbi brushed Ilgak off resulting in them quarreling. With his comrades fooling around, Goo Hwi took on Okcheonbi.

Further back in the tunnel, Yongbi took note of the tremors and mentioned that Goo Hwi and Okcheonbi were still fighting and Ilgak told him to turn back. Suddenly, they saw a massive explosion radiating towards them and Ilgak screamed at him to leave prompting Yongbi to knock him out. Yongbi then upturned a massive chunk of the ground to block the explosion. When the dust settled, Ilgak wook up and Yongbi started to move further down the tunnel, mentioning the battle was finished and that one of the two must have died. However, Ilgak once against suggested that they turn back, annoying Yongbi. Eventually, Ilgak and Yongbi made their way through the tunnel and noticed Goo Hwi standing in the distance in silence. Ilgak questioned if Goo Hwi died standing which only further irritated Yongbi. Then it is revealed that Goo Hwi won the fight and was standing over Okcheonbi who laid against a wall. The wall then crumbled exposing a room and inside sat another Okcheonbi but this one's was body; decaying, desiccated, and chained to a chair. After speaking with this Okcheonbi (another clone), the trio left. Goo Hwi and Yongbi paused for a moment after this Okcheonbi's death resulting in Ilgak screaming at them to leave now or he would go without them. Then traversing through the tunnel, Yongbi questioned the monk if he was going the right way causing the irritated Ilgak to lash out at him. At that, a tremor rang out across the cave.

The elderly trio eventually reached a dead-end and Yongbi chastised Ilgak for leading them there, claiming their way in was a flat path while they had been climbing on their way out. He then further raged at the monk for ignoring him the entire way when he continuously asked if they were going the right way. Unperturbed, Ilgak commented that they should rest and retrace their steps. Ilgak rebuked that because he had trained in the Sage Techniques, at least he could see faintly in the pitch dark cave and then suddenly, the cave started rumbling, cutting off their path with debris. As Ilgak desperately tried to dig his way out, Yongbi prepared to break out.

Ilgak broke through a wall and noticed the unconscious Doh Gyeom, Soh Jinhong, and Jin Garyeong lying nearby. The monk approached the trio, wondering what they were doing there and decided to render medical aid upon seeing their injuries. After tending to Gyeom and Jinhong's injuries, Ilgak released Jin Garyeong's pressure points before telling her to get some rest and to not strain herself. After looking at the state the young trio were in, the monk muses about how they were suppose to lead the Murim in the future and that it was unfortunate what happened to them. Then suddenly, the ceiling above Ilgak and the trio exploded. On the floor above, Yongbi annihilated Hyeol Bi along with the Dan. Yongbi then jumped down. In their ensuing conversation, Garyeong explained what happened to her and her comrades.

Ilgak then worried that the Black Dragon King could be in the vicinity but Yongbi revealed he already encountered and killed him. Ilgak mused about how the reason Hyeol Bi had such powers was because of the Dan and that he couldn't be killed without completely destroying the Dan as well, with Jin Garyeong mentioning she saw him regenerating multiple times when they fought them. In reply, Yongbi told them not to worry, explaining he obliterated the red Dan inside Hyeol Bi's body.

Underground, the explosion from Goo Hwi and Gang Ryong's clash ripped through the floor, surprising Yongbi, Ilgak, and Jin Garyeong. Ilgak questioned Yongbi if he had truly killed Hyeol Bi and refused to believe him, attributing the explosion to Hyeol Bi's work. Yongbi smacked Ilgak on the head for his insolence, and replied that he beat Hyeol Bi dead on the floor above while the rumbling was coming from below. After a much larger explosion started to radiate through the floor, Yongbi told Ilgak to take the injured to safety while he prepared to defend against the explosion. After Hong Ye-Mong and Song Yerin arrived, Ilgak stayed with them and the young trio the rest of the time at the Sky Gorge Mountain.

Later, when Goo Hwi was injured in his battle with the real Okcheonbi, Ilgak checked up on Goo Hwi and told Jin Garyeong not to worry about her grandfather since his injuries were severe but not life threatening.

With the recent incident passing, Ilgak was seen returning to the Sage Forest with the other elders.

Powers and Abilities[]

Evil Subduing Thirteen Palms (1)

Ilgak prepares to use a secret technique; Evil Subduing Thirteen Palms

In the past, Ilgak was famously known by many titles such as The New Star of The Shaolin and The Hope of The Shaolin.[2][5] He was the only direct disciple of Grand Monk Baegun and was such a genius at martial arts that it forced Grand Monk Baegun to break his own oath of not accepting any disciples. At a young age no older than most martial apprentice monks, he was already appointed as the Murim High Lord's proxy on behalf of the Shaolin Temple which speaks volumes about his skill. As the Murim High Lord's proxy, he carried the High Lord's Edict which allowed him to exercise the full authority of the High Lord himself, his testimonies must be treated as if it had been issued from the High Lord's mouth.[2] Ilgak is also famed for being highly skilled in the medical arts. Despite being a genius in martial arts, Ilgak claims that he is not a martial monk and that he only learned the basics.[5] Even though Ilgak is not a martial monk, he is still truly a competent fighter and has many impressive techniques under his belt.

Immense Physical Strength: Ilgak possesses great physical strength, a single kick from him is more than enough to send a person flying.[6]

Immense Agility & Reflexes: His incredible agility along with his acrobatics allow Ilgak to easily evade other peoples attacks. Even against the Lightning God's Blue Dragon Sword, he easily dodged its slashes at close distances and was able to catch the blade between his hands mid-swing. His agility also enables him to jump multiple times in mid-air.[6]

Disarming Technique: Ilgak utilised an unnamed technique to disarm people of their weapons. After sandwiching his opponent's blade between his hands, he exudes an immense amount of ki and pressure which visibly stresses the area around him. If the person does not let go of their weapon, their arm will rip and snap.[6]

Medical Arts: Ilgak's talent as a healer is well-renowned. He was able to easily counteract the effects of the Demonic Technique's poison,[2] and correct the distorted ki flow of a wounded person.[7]

Weapons[]

Mala: The mala Ilgak wears can be used as a tool for defending and attacking. The 108 mala beads are connected with strings forged from ten thousand-year-old cold steel that is able to withstand a thousand geun. Since it is difficult to cut, Ilgak used it to block sword attacks but if the string does get severed, he can swing the mala to fire a barrage of beads with enough force to riddle his opponent with holes.[6]

As a monk of the Shaolin Temple, Ilgak is trained in the Shaolin Martial arts as well as numerous secret techniques:

Grand Death Life Technique:

Sage Techniques: As a member of the Sage Forest, Ilgak had mastered powerful Sage Techniques, one of which allows him to see faintly in pitch-black darkness.[8] Another effect is that it prevented Hwan Sa from using his Trigram to predict the movements of the Sage Forest elders.[9]

Quotes[]

  • (To Yongbi) "If it wasn't for those few barrels of booze, I would have let you die."[10]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In Buddhist tradition, the 108 beads signifies the mortal desires of mankind.[11]
